Activities for Spelling Practice
- Spray shaving cream on a table and trace the words in it.
- Write the words with a stick in dirt or sand.
- Create your own crossword puzzle using Discovery Education's Puzzlemaker, and solve it.
- Create a word search through Discovery Education's Puzzlemaker, and find each word.
- Write a story using all the spelling words.
- Use magnetic letters, alphabet blocks, Scrabble letters, or letter cards to build the spelling words.
- Write each spelling word in the air using your finger while moving your whole arm.
- Do some "buddy study" with a partner. Quiz each other aloud over the spelling words. Then, do the same on paper. Be sure to check it for the correct spelling.
- Write each of the spelling words. Then, using crayons, colored pencils, or markers, trace over the vowels in red and the consonants in blue.
- Write each of the words on two different index cards. Turn all the cards face down, mix them up, and lay them out in rows. Flip over two cards. Read each card aloud to see if they match. If they match, spell the word aloud and take the cards. If they don't match, flip over the cards and try again.
- Write a song or rap that includes all the spelling words. Sing it to a friend or family member.
- Use old magazines, catalogs, or newspapers to cut out letters (check with a parent first). Glue the letters down on a piece of paper to spell the words. *Helpful hint: Cut out lots of extra letters. Put them in a plastic storage bag to save time for future use.
- If you are right handed, write the spelling words with your left hand. If you are left handed, write them with your right hand.
- In a darkened room, use a flashlight to write the spelling words on a wall or on the ceiling. Have a partner say each letter aloud as you spell the word with the flashlight. After spelling the word, your partner should say it aloud. Then, switch! Have your partner “flash write” each word as you spell it aloud, and then say the word.
- Write the spelling words in dots. Then, connect the dots by tracing over them with a colored pencil.
