Reading and writing are extremely important skills. My goal is to help my students make great strides in literacy this year. I will do this by using informal and formal assessments to guide my teaching, by giving explicit strategy instruction, by giving students frequent opportunities to read and write, and by providing students with appropriate texts and tasks at their reading levels.
We have large blocks of uninterrupted time that will be used specifically for literacy instruction. During that time, I will give instruction in reading, writing, grammar, spelling, phonics, vocabulary, and handwriting. Using various genres of literature, I will teach decoding and comprehension strategies, along with language and writing skills. Your child will participate in guided reading, which is instruction in small groups using reading materials at his or her instructional level. I will use Reader's Theater, choral reading, echo reading, and other activities to help improve reading fluency and expression. Each day, I will set aside time for students to read and write for pleasure. Language arts will also be integrated with the social studies and science content. I will do my best to tailor my instruction to fit the strengths and weaknesses of each student.
I would like your help at home to strengthen your child’s literacy. Encourage him or her to write letters and to keep a journal. Help your child understand the weekly spelling patterns. Seize every opportunity to have your child read. Restaurant menus, road signs, sale ads, magazines, recipes, and comics are great for reading practice. Make trips to the public library together. Have your child read every evening, and explain the meaning of unknown words that he or she encounters while reading. The only way to become a great reader and writer is to practice!
I am confident that your child will make good progress in literacy this year and have fun learning, too! Thank you for your support.
